The Village Square Leisure Centre, one of Calgary's largest recreational facilities, will close its doors this fall for over a year to undergo critical structural repairs. The closure, beginning August 31, will displace approximately 300,000 annual visitors who will need to seek alternative options.
Scope of Renovations
The repairs focus on aging infrastructure, including upgrades to electrical and mechanical systems. Project engineer Patrick Cyr noted that the centre is over 40 years old, with many original systems past their useful life. Key work includes replacing boilers and air handling units, as well as safety improvements to the pool area. The project is expected to continue until the end of 2027.
Facilities Affected
Most spaces will be closed during construction. However, the Calgary Public Library, Fair Entry, and the Alberta Health Services (AHS) Community Health Centre will remain open, with only a short closure period planned. The timeline for these closures is yet to be confirmed. The centre's arenas will stay operational until March 2027, then close for construction and reopen in mid-September 2027. Calgary Transit passes will no longer be available at this facility, and the Centre for Newcomers will relocate to 125-565 36th St. N.E.
Community Partnerships
The city is coordinating with local organizations to host displaced activities. The Village Square Community Hub and Pineridge community social worker will use spaces in Pineridge, Rundle, Temple, and Whitehorn. The Pineridge Community Association will offer three fitness classes, a women's newcomers group, an after-school drop-in program, and craft and knitting sessions.
Marcie Buzsik, president of the association, described the partnership as a "win-win." She emphasized that the association is close to the leisure centre, making services accessible within walking distance for Pineridge residents. Buzsik also expressed hope that diverse community groups will engage with the association, fostering cultural exchange and learning.
