The City of Regina has initiated its annual cankerworm spraying program this week, advising residents to be aware of crews operating in their neighborhoods. Starting Monday, more than 4,000 trees are scheduled for treatment to prevent damage caused by these common pests, according to a city news release.
Targeted Neighbourhoods
This year's program will focus on specific areas within neighborhoods such as Rosemont-Mount Royal, Coronation Park, Cathedral, and Heritage. The city aims to reduce damage and maintain tree health by concentrating on locations with the highest cankerworm populations.
“We’re targeting areas where cankerworm numbers are highest so we can reduce damage and keep our trees in good shape,” said Russell Eirich, director of parks and open space services.
Understanding Cankerworms
Cankerworm larvae hatch in the spring and are light green in color. They primarily feed on elm and maple trees, consuming young leaves and weakening the trees over time. Adult cankerworms transform into mottled brown moths.
Each year, the city monitors cankerworm and tent caterpillar populations using a tree-banding program. In May or June, crews spray the areas with the highest concentrations.
Spraying Details and Safety
Regina uses Foray 48B, a commercial BTK insecticide approved by Health Canada. This product is toxic to cankerworms when ingested but is not harmful to other insects, birds, animals, or humans upon contact, according to the city.
Residents on streets within scheduled spray zones will receive a 48-hour notice before any treatment. During spraying, people are advised to stay away, close windows and doors, and move cars off the street if possible. The city will not spray trees on private property.
