Transit fares in York Region are set to increase starting July 2026, affecting riders of York Region Transit (YRT) and Viva bus services. The fare hike was announced as part of the region's annual budget adjustments, aimed at covering rising operational costs and maintaining service levels.
New Fare Structure
Effective July 1, 2026, the base fare for a single adult ride on YRT and Viva will increase from $4.25 to $4.50. The monthly adult pass will rise from $158 to $166. Senior and student fares will also see increases, with single rides going from $3.10 to $3.30 and monthly passes from $112 to $118.
Express Routes
Fares for express routes, including Viva Purple, Viva Pink, and Viva Orange, will see a higher increase. A single express ride will cost $5.50, up from $5.25, and the express monthly pass will rise from $210 to $220.
Reduced Fare Programs
The region offers reduced fares for low-income residents through the Fair Pass Transit Discount program. Those eligible will continue to receive a 33% discount on single fares and monthly passes. The revised rates for Fair Pass holders will be $3.00 for a single ride and $111 for a monthly pass for adults.
Reason for the Increase
According to York Region officials, the fare increase is necessary to offset inflation, rising fuel costs, and increased demand for transit services. The region has seen a steady growth in ridership since the pandemic, with numbers now exceeding pre-pandemic levels on some routes.
“This adjustment ensures we can continue to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transit services to our growing community,” said a spokesperson for York Region Transit. “We remain committed to keeping fares as affordable as possible while investing in improvements.”
Public Reaction
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from riders. Some commuters expressed frustration over the rising cost of living, while others acknowledged the need for sustainable funding. “It's getting expensive to commute, but I understand they have to cover costs,” said Markham resident Sarah Linton.
Advocacy group Transit for York Region criticized the increase, calling for more provincial funding to keep fares low. “Residents are already struggling with housing and food costs. Transit should be a relief, not another burden,” said group spokesperson David Chen.
Looking Ahead
York Region plans to invest the additional revenue into expanding bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors, upgrading transit stations, and adding more electric buses to the fleet. The region also aims to improve frequency and reliability on high-demand routes.
Riders are encouraged to purchase passes online or via the YRT mobile app to save time and avoid lines. The new fares will apply to all services starting July 1, 2026.
